Why a financial plan?

More than a legal requirement

Since the new Companies Code, a financial plan is mandatory when incorporating any BV/SRL, NV/SA or other company in Belgium. The notary requests it at incorporation and keeps it for three years.

But a good financial plan is much more than a document for the notary. It forces you to think realistically about your turnover, costs, investments and financing.

Important: If your company goes bankrupt within three years, the court can check whether your financial plan was realistic. An overly optimistic plan can lead to personal liability. Have it drawn up by a certified accountant.

What does a financial plan contain?

  • Description of the activity and business model
  • Revenue and cost forecast for a minimum of 2 years
  • Opening balance sheet and start-up capital
  • Financing plan (own funds, loans)
  • Quarterly cash flow forecast
  • Break-even analysis
  • Risk analysis and sensitivity analysis
